First Comes Love, Then Comes Marriage

For some people this statement is untrue.  Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont, as well as the District of Columbia are the only states that have legalized same-sex marriage.  Thirty states have a constitutional amendments banning same-sex marriage.

Here in New Jersey, same-sex couples have to be satisfied with love coming first and then a less glamorous civil union.  Some have called it separate not equal.  There have been many battles already fought for the privilege to call it marriage in New Jersey, to no avail.

So what does this mean for the same-sex couple?  You get all of the benefits of marriage at the State level through a civil union with no Federal protections. For answers to some civil union questions, see my civil union Q&A page.

But do not fret, in the months ahead new battles are being waged in the court system to get same-sex marriage passed.  I will keep this blog up to date on the movement to bring love and marriage back together for everyone.
