Repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell

There are a lot of milestones throughout history for the LGBT community, but there have been few that have Federal consequences. President Obama’s signing of the landmark law repealing the ban on gay men and women serving openly in the armed services is something to celebrate. President Obama said, “This is a good day,” “A very good day.” I believe the President should have said this is a day of Freedom and Respect.

Many men and women die everyday in the armed forces to protect the rights we cherish as Americans. Many of us in our warm homes this Christmas are not worrying if those men and women are gay. Many of us lament for their families who will lose a loved one this Christmas or who will be praying they see their loved one again. The men and women who fight for us deserve to have the same rights and freedoms we enjoy.

This landmark, history changing signing, is an inevitable nod to the gay community that the government recognizes the injustices facing the LGBT community. I am not delusional to think change will come over night, but this is a start.
